    Description

***NOTE- MOST PRINTS ARE MUCH SHARPER, WITH BETTER COLOR & SATURATION THAN THE SAMPLE
PRINT SEEN HERE. WE MAY BE HAVING AN EBAY CAUSED ERROR: POOR SHARPNESS, COLOR, &
RESOLUTION PROBLEMS WITH THE PHOTO YOU SEE HERE. WE ARE WAITING FOR EBAY TO FIX THIS***
This is a rare, older, less than fair quality - NO SCAN LINES (its grainy, has some dust marks and low contrast, from and old Tri-X film 45+ year old negative, but a nice popular historical photo) shrinkwrapped hand printed original silver halide gelatin photograph (not a digital inkjet print) custom printed by long time Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus in a darkroom from the original negative. It was archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford 'Pearl' semi-matte surface black & white photographic paper
    cropped and mounted on a
    single
    8x10 inch backing board
**which includes margins which are included as part of the print that you see here
    and
    **
note that the black margin may be slightly uneven on the sample here but not on the  one we're selling. There are also no scan lines  (see photo), with caption and photography information on the back of Hawaiian surfing legend Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay 1967, North Oahu, on a smaller day, he was out by himself but there were some 20 foot sets.
It is initialed ('BR 67') by the photographer in the lower corner and dated on the front of the photo, is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage and  has preservation tips included in the label on the back.
Again,** please note: it is from an older grainy negative so please be aware of that, and has some major blemishes and won't look as sharp on the larger print.
It was taken when the photographer was a senior in high school, hand held, with an old Pentax 135mm lens on Kodak Tri-X. This is right before short boards started showing up on the north shore. Haven't printed a whole lot of these and it is probably a collectible.
It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes Waimea Bay or historic surf
    er
    s and
images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
Eddie, who was known as a big wave rider, also liked to surf small to medium size waves at this break, Laniakea, Sunset, Haleiwa, Makaha, and Chun's Reef. Edward Ryan Aikau, who was born on Maui in 1946 was lost at sea during a ocean disaster on the Hokule'a ancient sailing canoe replica in 1978. During an extremely hazardous storm, the double hulled canoe capsized and Aikau left on a surfboard in an attempt to paddle for help, he was never seen again. He will always be remembered as a true Hawaiian surfing legend and a surfing friend of th
    e
    photographer
. Ironically it was the late big wave surfer Mark Foo who came up the term "Eddie Would Go" which actually referred to the fact that Eddie would go for it on the biggest waves that other surfers refused, often taking off on the other side of the bowl at Waimea on giant days! Aikau was a personal friend of the photographer and gave us permission to sell this photo before he passed away and we hope it will help preserve his memory in Hawaii surfing history.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii.
We're proud to mention that many of our photos were used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Hawaii 5-0".
The photos are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it. Larger unmounted prints are also available, please inquire.

    PLEASE ALSO NOTE
    :
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper and the photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen.
You may be able to see small imperfections on larger images as these are printed by hand 'as is' and are not retouched. We do however try to crop and correct them so they look best. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from the original negative and margins may be slightly trimmed. **When it is attached to the single mat 8x10"backing board you will be able to see the backing board  around the borders of the print which you can see here. It makes the print look like there is a margin at the top and bottom edges of the photo.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is. We want to make sure you know exactly what you are buying so we hope our thorough description of these photos will answer all your questions before you purchase.
