silver halide gelatin photograph of pro surfer and Hawaiian big wave legend Brock Little getting tubed on one of best barrel rides ever at the Bay during the 199
0
Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave contest at Oahu's Waimea Bay on the north shore. It was custom hand printed in a
limited number
by longtime Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus in a darkroom from the original negative, and
was shot on T-Max 3200 film in the rain and is noticeably grainy
. It was archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford 'Pearl' semi-matte surface black & white photographic paper,
cropped,
and mounted on a single 8x10 inch backing board (see photo) with caption and photography information on the back. **Note that the white sticker is on the shrink wrap and not the print.
We were sorry to learn that Bro
ck had passed away and offer this photo to help preserve his memory as a true
champion and a friend of the photographer.

photo
years ago and we hope this image
honors him as a great person and a legend in surfing history.
This was arguably one of the largest and longest 'paddle in' (not tow-in) barrels ever ridden in a contest at the Bay, circa 1990. (date may be wrong on label, sorry) . It made surfing history and is is part of a seven shot sequence and was featured as a foldout centerfold poster in Surfing Magazine, and published in seven other surfing magazines worldwide. The print is initialed ('BR') and dated on the front lower corner of the photo, is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage, and has preservation tips included in the label on the back. Brock went for it and was completely covered for about 3 seconds on this 30 foot+ 'barrel' and was spit out (he made it!) of one of the suggested tube rides ever seen at the Bay. He probably would have won the contest, but because he hit a chop and fell off after being spit out of the tube points were deducted by the judges. You can see the 'boil' near the end of the wave. Brock is considered to be one of the all time great surfers at this spot and other monster wave breaks. Keone Downing won the contest. FYI: Brock is the older brother of Clark Little, a well known wave photographer.
It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes surfing, big waves, or historic ocean images images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
Waimea Bay has one the largest surf breaks in the world. It is also home of the Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave Surfing contest only held when the waves are at least 40 feet high. Waimea shorebreak waves are some of the most powerful on earth, generated by far distant North Pacific Ocean storms during the winter months (Sept-March). They are an incredible example of the ocean's mightiness. It has been said that one wave this size if harnessed for energy could provide enough electrical power to light a thousand homes for over an hour. Native Hawaiians, surfers, and a lot of oriental people consider these magnificent waves to be a supreme example of power and manifested with the spirit of mother nature. To actually see these waves breaking along the shoreline is an awesome, humbling, and unforgettable experience. In the near future real black and white silver halide photographic paper will cease to be available as manufacturers phase out production because of digital photography and we won't be printing these by hand in the darkroom forever.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii.
We're proud to mention that many of our photos are being used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Hawaii 5-0".
The photos are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. Our prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE
:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper and the photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. It was taken on TMAX 3200 asa (ISO) film, not digital, so it will look grainier and not as sharp as many computer type prints. Please be aware of this. You may be able to see small imperfections on larger images as these are printed by hand 'as is' and are not retouched. We do however try to crop and correct them so they look best. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from an original negative and margins may be slightly trimmed. **When it is cropped and attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the backing board around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a margin at the edges of the photo which you can see here.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is. We want to make sure you know exactly what you are buying so we hope our thorough description of these photos will answer all your questions before you purchase.
