Mechanical American Flag

Description

Designed and built by me from scratch. Inspired by flat/tabletop  'wave machines', this wall-mounted device is powered by a removable, rechargeable 12v lithium-ion battery pack (charger included; I didn't want a cord hanging down from this thing) and a premium grade motor with a planetary gearset (lots of torque). I incorporated a belt tensioner too! The wooden components were cut and/or engraved with a laser, the cams and brackets produced by a 3D printer. The two shafts that support the moving parts are steel and the camshaft rides on ball bearings. I left the slats unsanded and then painted them with milk paint, which was then protected with three coats of matte acrylic. The chassis itself has two coats of tung oil. That said, this machine is not suitable for outdoor use. It hangs from a robust French cleat. This is a fully functional prototype and there is no warranty; be prepared to periodically adjust and tweak the mechanism (which has been built to facilitate disassembly for maintenance). A lot of time, effort and revision went into this and I am wary of shipping it, given the number of moving parts. Local pickup is strongly recommended. If it comes to that, I'll pack it to the best of my ability (as well as insure it). Own and proudly display this one-of-a kind mechanical Glory!
