Ultrasonic Distance/Depth Sensors were purchased from a closed Solar Power System Integration / Installation company's assets and is new in bulk packaging. they were never installed or deployed and were
"bulk packaged"
in an anti-static zip-lock bag by the manufacturer,
bubble wrapped
and stored in a box
on a shelf in the assembly area where control and monitoring panel boxes were being assembled (when the company was in operation).
In addition to being used to monitor snow depth at solar power sites these sensors are widely used by Universities and .gov agencies at Environmental Monitoring Sites to measure river levels and to determine snow depth (also used at ski areas). Water level or snow depth measurements are accomplished by ultrasonically
measuring the distance down from the sensor
mounted at a
fixed height
above the surface and measuring the change in distance to the water or snow surface as the level/depth changes. Distance is measured each time the DS2 unit is queried by a Data Acquisition Module or Datalogger (or compatible weather station) when it applies voltage to the green wire and the DS2 then outputs distance as a voltage (0 to 5VDC by default or 0 to 2.5 VDC by jumper setting change) on the white wire (see manual for details). DS2 can also output temperature to some DAQ units and

Operation
The Judd Communications ultrasonic depth sensor is an inexpensive solution for remotely measuring snow depth or water levels. The sensor works by measuring the time required for an ultrasonic pulse to travel to and from a target surface. An integrated temperature probe with solar radiation shield, provides an air temperature measurement for properly compensating the distance measured. An embedded microcontroller calculates a temperature compensated distance and performs an error checking routine.
Both distance and air temperature are output as an analog signal between 0 to 5 Volts.
Due to the simplified interface, the depth sensor can interface with any datalogger or control system that can delay at
least 3 seconds after powering up before measuring the output.
